The airport fire department
The fire department bears a major share of the responsibility for safety at the airport. In addition to fire protection and technical support, its wide-ranging tasks include maintaining fire safety watches and the support of medical services.
Legal status of the airport fire department
The Freising District Administration Office has officially recognized the airport fire department as a plant fire department. The certification document includes requirements regarding the fire department’s organization, number of staff, training, vehicles, equipment, fire stations, fire department operations center. The mandatory tasks of the fire department are
- Fire protection and technical support for aviation and related facilities in accordance with the current ICAO guidelines (ICAO: International Civil Aviation Organization)
- Fire protection and technical support in buildings and facilities at the airport in accordance with the Bavarian Fire Protection Act
- Providing assistance outside the airport at the request of local fire departments in accordance with the Bavarian Fire Department Act
The fire department roster currently includes 193 positions
A workforce of 164 employees work around the clock, serving in two fire watch departments to perform 40 functions. The functions of the “Operations supervisor” and the “Situational Duty Manager” are performed by employees qualified as senior firefighters. Six of these employees are constantly on duty in 24-hour rotating shifts. The heads of the organizational units of the fire department perform their duties when required.
Structure of the alarm duty crew:
The minimum presence of the fire department is currently 42 employees. This number is made up as follows:
- 1 on-duty operational commander with leadership assistant
- 1 shift commander for aircraft fire protection with leadership assistant
- 1 shift commander for building fire protection with leadership assistant
- 1 situational commander in the fire department command center
- 2 incident response staff in the fire department command center
- 2 crews for aircraft fire protection, each with one crew commander and eight firefighters
- 2 crews for building fire protection, each with one crew commander and five firefighters
- 1 platoon with an independent platoon leader and two firefighters
