Press: Airport continues recovery in first quarter of 2023

Thanks to significant passenger growth of 17 percent, Munich Airport (FMG) recorded a positive annual result (EAT) of EUR 25 million for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic. Revenue increased to approximately EUR 1.4 billion. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) moved back into the positive range for the first time since 2019 at EUR 115 million. 

Munich Airport continued its recovery in first quarter of 2023, with around seven million passengers counted between January and March. This was 70% more than in the same period of the previous year. Due to the restrictions on international travel as a result of the pandemic, only a little over four million passengers had used Munich Airport for a flight in the first quarter of 2021. 

The ongoing positive development at Munich Airport is clearly reflected in the traffic figures for 2023. Passenger numbers rose by five million year-on-year to a total of 37 million. With its current passenger volume, Munich Airport has reached around 80% of the record level from the pre-crisis year 2019. The number of aircraft movements rose by six percent compared to 2022 to more than 300,000 take-offs and landings. The seat load factor reached a record level of 81.3 percent, thereby exceeding 80 percent for the first time since the airport opened. 

For the first time, an aircraft of the Moldovan airline FlyOne landed in the Bavarian capital. Every Wednesday and Saturday, FlyOne now connects Munich with the Moldovan capital Chisinau. The flights are operated by Airbus A320 aircraft. 

EasyJet is now connecting a new destination with Munich. From June 28, the low-cost airline is serving Naples three times a week, satisfying the high demand from Munich's catchment area for flights to the popular vacation region. With flights to the region around the Amalfi Coast and the offshore islands of Capri and Ischia, the airline has added another route to its established flights from Munich to London-Gatwick, Manchester and Edingburgh

Japan's largest airline ANA and member of the Star Alliance, is returning to Munich Airport after a pandemic-related break. With the start of the summer flight schedule, the 5-star airline is thus resuming its nonstop connection from Munich to Tokyo's city-near Haneda Airport.

The summer flight schedule will begin on Sunday, March 26, 2023, and end on Saturday, October 28. Munich Airport is offering many new destinations again this summer, as well as a new airline. Lufthansa, the biggest airline at Munich Airport, will start operating additional flight connections.

With the increase of its cargo service between Munich and Doha from two to four weekly flights, Qatar Airways is doubling its capacity. All flights are operated on behalf of the logistics company DB Schenker. 

Flughafen München GmbH (FMG) and Lufthansa are reaffirming and strengthening their successful strategic partnership. The two companies are now signing a letter of intent (LOI) to intensify and continue the sustainable development of Munich Airport.

A busy summer has gifted Munich Airport massive growth in all traffic figures in 2022: Passenger numbers rose by 19 million year on year to a total of 31.6 million. 

Renovation work gets under way at Munich Airport’s Terminal 2: The central security checkpoint at Munich Airport’s Terminal 2 is being modernized and equipped with state-of-the-art technology, with completion scheduled for fall 2024. As a result, passengers of Lufthansa and its partner airlines will benefit from faster, more effective procedures and much greater convenience.

Taiwanese airline EVA AIR is heading to Germany for the first time, offering four flights a week from Taipei to Munich. Flights to the Taiwanese metropolis will leave from Munich on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. A modern Dreamliner – the long-haul aircraft Boeing 787-9 – will be used. 

With the start of the winter flight schedule, the Greek airline SKY express is expanding the range of flights between Munich and Athens. The airline will fly five times a week to its hub in the Greek capital. From there, passengers can easily reach a total of 34 connecting destinations in Greece with SKY express.
