The aviation industry has recognized the signs of the times: Researchers and technicians are working on the question of how to fly in the future without harming the climate.

Flughafen München GmbH (FMG) is intensifying its existing climate targets and now intends to achieve net zero by 2035 rather than 2050 as previously. Achieving net zero means reducing the emissions that the airport itself can influence – known as Scope 1 and 2 emissions – by a minimum of 90%. The remaining around 10% of emissions must be actively and permanently removed from the atmosphere.

Avoiding food waste and saving money – while promoting sustainability: Allresto, the Munich Airport subsidiary responsible for most of the airport's food and beverage operations, has launched a pilot project to test a new app: "Too Good To Go". This digital platform lets airport visitors, passengers and employees order surplus food prepared by restaurants and other food service establishments at special reduced prices for pick-up between 8:00 and 9:30 pm. The first restaurant at Munich Airport to join the pilot project is Surf & Turf (photo) in the Munich Airport Center (MAC).

Munich Airport has opened a new chapter in its IT security activities. At a special ceremony today, the airport launched its Information Security Hub (ISH) – a competency center where IT specialists with the airport operating company (FMG) will work together with experts from the European aviation industry to develop strategies for defending against cyberattacks and new approaches to the fight against cybercrime.
