New requirements for non-EU nationals

The Entry/Exit System (EES) has been in force throughout Europe since October 12, 2025. These new travel regulations affect third-country nationals entering and leaving the EU. EU citizens are not affected by EES. These new travel regulations will replace traditional passport stamps in the long term. The EES has been in use at Munich Airport since April 2026.

What changes does EES bring to Schengen borders?


For non-EU nationals entering the EU, border procedures will change. Upon arrival, travelers will be digitally registered in a central European database through passport scans, facial recognition, and fingerprint collection. Departures will also be recorded to enhance security across Europe.

What to expect as a passenger?


The implementation of this new system will increase processing times at the border. However, Munich Airport is working closely with authorities to ensure the process remains efficient and easy. To help speed up passenger flow, 119 self-service registration kiosks have been installed (at selected checkpoints), while final identity verification continues to be conducted at the Federal Police border counter. The usage of the Self-Service Systems is recommended. EU nationals may continue to use EasyPass, to keep waiting times to a minimum.

Self-Service System fingerprints

 
To ensure a smooth border control process when entering or leaving the European Union, it is recommended to prepare for the new Entry/Exit System (EES) in advance. The Self-Service System digitally records biometric data - such as fingerprints and a facial image. In most cases, the process is completed automatically at Self-Service Systems or during passport control.

To help streamline your journey, please:

  • Arrive earlier than usual, especially for non-Schengen flights
  • Have all travel documents ready (passport, visa, or ETIAS, if applicable)
  • Follow signs and announcements at the airport
  • Use self-service kiosks where available


Please note: Children under 12 and travelers with reduced mobility will be processed manually at staffed counters.

As EES is gradually rolled out across Europe, Munich Airport is also adapting its infrastructure and passenger guidance. To help third-country nationals navigate the airport smoothly, the following measures have been implemented:

  • Signage and staff support: Clear, step-by-step signage will guide you through the process. Our airport staff is available to assist if needed.

  • Color coding: Information for non-EU nationals is marked in orange; signs in blue apply to EU nationals.

  • Passport control: After using the kiosk, follow the signs to the appropriate border control booth. Depending on age, passport type, or travel status, some travelers may be directed straight to manual counters.

  • Accessibility: Travelers with reduced mobility, children under 12, and those without biometric passports will be processed at staffed border control counters.
