Press: The First 100 Days of Terminal 1 Pier: A Successful Start

More comfort. More quality. A better travel experience.

July 29, 2026

  • 1.5 million passengers
  • 9,100 takeoffs and landings
  • Foundation for further growth

Today marks exactly 100 days since the new pier in Terminal 1 (T1) began operations on April 21, 2026. Since then, approximately 1.5 million passengers have used the pier’s new arrival and departure areas, and they have been delighted. With its comfortable gate and waiting areas, inviting dining and retail spaces, and optimized processes, the expansion is setting new standards and significantly contributing to the airport’s future.

Jost Lammers, Chief Executive Officer of Munich Airport (FMG), said: "The first 100 days of operation show that our new T1 pier is functioning successfully and has been very well received by both passengers and partners. With this pier, we are laying the foundation for further growth and an even better travel experience."

A recent passenger survey reflects the high level of acceptance and satisfaction with the new T1 Pier. 96 percent of respondents reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their travel experience. The modern design, bright atmosphere, and high-quality space received particular praise. Comments ranged from "The new pier is great" and "Beautiful space and pleasant lighting" to "I’ve been very pleasantly surprised since my last visit" and "One of the best airport facilities in Europe," underscoring travelers' positive perceptions.

With up to 60 departures per day and approximately 9,100 flight movements over the entire period - 80 percent of which took place at parking positions near the terminal - the pier has already impressively demonstrated its capacity.

Currently, up to 20,000 passengers a day use the new T1 pier and the services of 37 airlines flying to 48 destinations in 23 non-Schengen countries in Europe, Africa, North America, the Middle East, and the Far East.

At the heart of the pier is a central marketplace featuring around 20 retail, service, and dining options. A special highlight is Munich Airport’s first "walk-through duty-free" area. Restaurants and shops are seamlessly integrated into the architecture and passenger flow, making shopping, dining, and relaxing an integral part of the travel experience. Natural materials, warm colors, and clean lines combine Munich’s urban flair with inspiration from the Bavarian countryside, creating a modern atmosphere with a distinctive regional character.

The newly introduced "Chinese Assistant" service has also been very well received. Between April and June, more than 300 Chinese-speaking passengers took advantage of the free shopping and orientation service. Whiskey and chocolate were particularly in demand. For FMG’s retail subsidiary eurotrade, the first 100 days also brought a special success: the most valuable Breitling watch in the company’s history was sold at the new Breitling store.

Along with the opening of the new pier, Munich Airport has revamped its dining options. The new restaurants focus on high-quality products, modern design, and a welcoming atmosphere. Five new restaurants operated by the airport’s subsidiary, Allresto, offer a blend of regional specialties and international food trends. During the opening of the new dining areas, the Allresto team shared an emotional moment with renowned gourmet restaurateur Michael Käfer at a joint ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The results from the first 100 days are correspondingly positive: Approximately 132,000 guests were served, more than 12,000 pizzas were prepared, and over 2,500 white sausages were sold. The most popular items among passengers are the specialty coffees in the deli area- a total of around 53,300 cups have already been served.
