Munich Airport, along with its ground handling subsidiary AeroGround, has officially launched a new electric bus depot. The event was attended by Ulrich Lange, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, Munich Airport CEO Jost Lammers, and AeroGround Managing Director David Konradi, along with representatives from NOW GmbH and MAN Truck & Bus.

Another step towards "Net Zero 2035", the sustainability strategy of Munich Airport, has been taken: MAN Truck & Bus Germany has delivered the first ten electric solo passenger buses to AeroGround Flughafen München GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Munich Airport. A further 27 electric buses of MAN Lion's City E 12 and E 18 models will be put into operation by the end of the year. There is an option to purchase 25 additional buses.

An innovative system for sustainable energy generation is currently in use at Munich Airport: a container with photovoltaic panels and wind rotors from FlowGen, a company specializing in green energy system solutions. In cooperation with Munich Airport, the mobile energy container is being used to charge electric vehicles.

Nadine Adden (29) works as a tug driver and de-icer at Munich Airport. When winter hits, she helps to make sure that aircraft take off safely.

The aviation industry has recognized the signs of the times: Researchers and technicians are working on the question of how to fly in the future without harming the climate.

Flughafen München GmbH (FMG) is intensifying its existing climate targets and now intends to achieve net zero by 2035 rather than 2050 as previously. Achieving net zero means reducing the emissions that the airport itself can influence – known as Scope 1 and 2 emissions – by a minimum of 90%. The remaining around 10% of emissions must be actively and permanently removed from the atmosphere. 

Safety is the top priority: High above the ground in Munich Airport's 78-meter tower, air traffic controllers and ramp controllers guide up to 90 aircraft from the ground to the sky and back every hour, while a weather observer keeps track of winds and visibility.
