20 outstanding years with environmental management according to EMAS

20 years of EMAS

August 27, 2025

The diverse processes and activities involved in flight operations at Munich Airport have a wide range of effects on the environment. The environmental management system regularly assesses all these effects according to the criteria of significance and influence. Based on this, future areas of action and key topics for improving environmental performance can be defined. This includes, among other things, the preservation of water and air quality, near-natural habitats, and energy efficiency measures.

The Munich Airport website provides exciting background information on all relevant environmental topics in the airport environment under Climate and Environmental Protection.

With a poster and video campaign on the topic of 20 outstanding years of environmental management according to EMAS, FMG will present selected examples of environmentally relevant key topics at Munich Airport throughout 2025. Follow our campaign – live on site at the airport or here on our homepage.

Mobile aircraft noise measurements

Flying connects people worldwide, but it also causes noise pollution. Aircraft noise directly affects many residents in the region, which is why reliable recording and transparent presentation of this data is so important.

Flughafen München GmbH (FMG) operates 16 stationary measuring stations for this purpose, which provide data around the clock and enable an objective picture of the noise situation. In addition, FMG voluntarily carries out mobile measurements with a self-sufficient measuring station in order to be able to respond to specific concerns of individual communities.

In addition to collecting measurement data, FMG is committed to open communication. The published results are presented in an easily understandable way, while the concerns and individual perceptions of residents are taken seriously. With a bundle of active and passive measures – from optimized flight procedures and restrictions on night flights to noise protection programs – FMG is working to significantly reduce noise pollution.

The meadow birds at Munich Airport

The "Nördliches Erdinger Moos" bird sanctuary covers more than 4,500 hectares, including 666 hectares of meadows in the immediate vicinity of the runways.

These airport meadows in particular have become a valuable refuge for numerous endangered bird species. The curlew is particularly noteworthy: for this bird, the areas at Munich Airport represent the most important breeding ground in the whole of Bavaria.

Munich Airport thus impressively demonstrates that technical infrastructure and active nature conservation are not mutually exclusive, but can coexist in a balanced way.

Airport honey: quality tested and certified organic

Airport honey is produced as part of extensive research that proves it is of impeccable quality and completely unaffected by airport operations. This makes it one of the most rigorously tested foods in the entire region.

In addition, honey from the airport region carries the organic seal—a quality mark that further underscores its exceptional purity and sustainable production.
