Construction projects at Munich Airport

Munich Airport’s new T1 Pier for non-Schengen traffic has been in operation since April 21, 2026. Covering 95,000 square meters, the new terminal area provides additional capacity for up to six million passengers a year and has been designed specifically with international long-haul travelers in mind. Alongside efficient passenger processes, the pier introduces a new world of shopping, services and dining that plays a defining role in the overall travel experience.

Today’s opening ceremony for the ibis Styles Munich Airport marks the addition of a modern, design-oriented hotel to the hospitality offerings at Munich Airport. The new hotel enhances the airport’s existing portfolio of lodging and dining options and underscores the location’s dynamic development as a premier international hub.

Ten years ago, on April 26, 2016, Terminal 2 Satellite opened at Munich Airport. Since its opening, approximately 93 million passengers have used the facility, and a total of about 672,000 flight movements have been handled. Within the Terminal 2 system, this area accounts for around 30 percent of takeoffs and landings as well as 36 percent of passengers. 

Today, Munich Airport's new Terminal 1 Pier has officially started regular operations. To mark the occasion, Thomas Hoff Andersson, Managing Director & Chief Operating Officer at Munich Airport, personally welcomed travelers. With the new pier now open for regular operations, it sets another milestone in the ongoing development of Munich Airport. 

This afternoon, the new pier in Terminal 1 at Munich Airport was officially opened with a festive ceremony. Around 1,000 invited guests from the worlds of politics, business, and aviation were present for the event. 

Munich Airport and Lufthansa are strengthening their successful joint venture with a new agreement. Key elements include the start of planning for the expansion of terminal infrastructure and provisions for continuing and developing the partnership through 2056. 

With the grand opening of the new Terminal 1 Pier on April 13, Munich Airport is setting another milestone in the further development of its infrastructure.

The expansion of Terminal 1 at Munich Airport is progressing smoothly according to plan. The new pier will create a state-of-the-art terminal for non-Schengen traffic, with the capacity to serve up to six million passengers per year — roughly equivalent to the total passenger volume of an airport like Hanover in Lower Saxony.

The new pier at Terminal 1 of Munich Airport is progressing rapidly: after the exterior façade was completed last year, the interior fit-out is currently making great strides.

Munich Airport is about to embark on a unique, future-focused project. Under the name LabCampus, the airport will develop an interdisciplinary idea and innovation center on the airport campus.
